Latin American Music in Los Angeles

I recently had the pleasure of reading Josh Kun’s edited volume The Tide Was Always High: The Music of Latin America in Los Angeles, published just last fall by the University of California Press. For music lovers, the collection is a revelation of the many ways music performed and recorded in Los Angeles has had a Latin American cast. The title of the book cites a good example of this: Blondie’s 1980 hit “The Tide Is High” featured mariachi horns and Latin percussion, and this quintessential New York/New Wave band took it all the way to number 1. The book is partner to an exhibition, and one of its real virtues among many is the remarkable album cover imagery Kun has collected. My full review is here at Boom California.
